The Maltese government has established the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority, an independent entity that will ensure that the highest educational standards are maintained. Speaking at the launch of the authority, Education Minister Justyne Caruana emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring quality education at all levels, “We are committed to providing access to quality education for all. This is a point we are pleased to highlight, as inclusive education is a fundamental right for every boy and girl. Through this authority, we hope to build an educational community where everyone feels valued and accepted.

For her part, the Authority’s chief executive officer, Rose Anne Cuschieri, said the body will work to legitimize and safeguard institutions as much as the curricula and students themselves.

The authority will be tasked with regulating educational institutions that provide educational offerings at every level to ensure that this is done to the highest standards.

To this end, the main roles are accreditation, i.e. the formal recognition of the quality of projects submitted by higher education providers or an education program related to the levels within the Maltese Qualifications Framework, and quality assurance of the overall education system in the economic, social and cultural context, at national, European and international levels.

These processes will lead to the granting of binding licenses necessary to operate in Malta in full compliance.
